The Story
Hello! I'm Kelly, the face behind Newberry Collective.
This all started a few years ago while in the depths of postpartum depression. I met a woman in a gas station parking lot one day, where she popped her trunk to reveal a beautiful (but seriously filthy) antique quilt that was wedged under a spare tire. I took that quilt home, mended and washed it, and made my first bag. I made it for myself, with no intention of making more. But as I wore it, people started to ask if I could make custom bags from their personal family quilts. It was such a beautiful concept, that I said yes! It snowballed, of course. And now we're here! Welcome!
Almost all of the quilts I use are handmade. As a sewist and quilter myself, I sometimes struggle to take a blade to these beautiful works of art. Most of these vintage and antique quilts were heavily damaged when I sourced them. I believe that transforming them into wearable art honors the women who made them.
When you wear a bag or coat made from a vintage quilt, you're showcasing the talent and traditions of the past and present. Thank you for being part of their story, and being part of Newberry Collective!
